Well I’ve thought about it and I think an external hard drive was a good idea, so I go to the Apple store and ask them what would be a good portable external ant the guy said a FireLite hard drive would be the best so I looked at the FireLite hard drives and I thought they looked kinda cool. I would Like to know if you have any information on these hard drives, and I have two in mind the 40GB and the 60GB, the 40 for $150 and the 60 for $180 do you think I should pay the extra $30 for 20 more GB’s I could use them. What do you think?

I think that if it’s only $30 more go for the extra 20GB, I can tell you from personal experience you can never have an external drive that’s too big (I’m considering a second one already), but then again it depends on what your gonna use it for.

The best bet is to buy an external hard drive enclosure for $15, then you can pop in any internal hard drive and carry it around with you, and use hard drives like floppy disks. Your dad probably has old hard drives lying around the place, and you can buy a 300 gigabyte drive for $110, meaning $125 gets you a 300 gig external drive.

If you want to go the route of getting your own brand new drive I’d recommend a drive that’s at least big enough to back up all your portable devices i.e. the iBook, IPod and any other devices you have. Does 60GB cover all your devices? The second consideration is that what you think is enough storage today probably won’t be enough in two years time or more so always get the most bang for your buck that you can. Then again in two years time there may well be other approaches to volume storage of personal data (e.g. Google online drive). Nathan’s suggestion is probably the most cost effective approach to meeting your current objective and if anyone you know had old hard drives lying around they want to donate to you, you get get the storage you need for only the cost of the enclosure. Beware though, the reason the drives are lying around in the first place might be because they had performance issues i.e. they are on the verge of crashing. Good luck with your decision.

I have an iBook 1.33Ghz with a 60 gig hd. I got the firelight 100 gb hd so i could use it for my itunes.
You have to consider that you are always going to need more than less space. I’d say go with as big as you can possibly afford.

Feb 15… I’m a Mac nutball and have been reading your dad’s blog since November 2004. In fact, just took his advice and bought an EVDO card for my 17″ mac laptop (Erricson GC89). Also been trading him emails off/on all that time. Seems nice enough.
I bought a big honkin external hard drive… a LaCie 500Gb at CompUSA and didn’t remember spending too very much for it. You might consider going high end…

I have a 60GB firelite (the size that is about as big as a hand) and it’s a champ. I’ve been running it for two year. I also dropped it and it skittered across Dearborn street one day about a year and a half ago. No problems!
